    "Studies on Colour Field Modulation" by I/O – CARLOS SANTOS | ULRICH MITZLAFF, with Carlos Santos (electronics, objects) and Ulrich Mitzlaff (violoncello, objects)

    I/O exists since 1998 and during all these years, we both played as an electro-acoustic duo, in the field of free improvisation and real time composition. Besides playing in other constellations and contexts with many other musicians, the idea of the duo materialized constantly in concerts and performances. The concept behind this CD, namely, the piece “Blau”, the founding stone, came to be from one of these concerts, we were invited in 2014, to play as duo I/O at the Museum Vostell of Contemporary Art, Malpartida de Carceres (Spain), in a Festival for Contemporary Music with almost 30 years of tradition.

    For the CD project “Studies on Colour Field Modulation” we recorded, a revised version of “Blau”, that works with everyday materials, in this case aluminium wrapped around the instruments, that slowly get unwrapped, revealing a multitude of musical materials during the development of the piece, in an almost “performative” manner. “Orange” marks a more dialectic partnership between the musicians, composing in an electroacoustic context.

    The recording sessions took place in September 2020
    at the Studio of “Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa (OCP)”
    in Algés-Oeiras (near Lisbon), Portugal.
